ASHLAND SCHOOL

In 1871 the Ashland School District was formed from the southern end of Big Valley School District. This area was sometimes known as "Hog Wallow". The natives of the area dug many holes to find the roots of Sweet Anise, which left the area looking like hogs had rooted around there. This school stood on the east side of Highland Springs Road.
A new school was built in 1892 across the road and to the north of the present Lampson Airport, and school sessions were held there until the 1920s. After the school was closed the building was used as the Big Valley Farm Center & Women's Club, and called the Big Valley Community Club. The building was still standing in 1977.
